Sterling dropped to a fresh five-month low against the euro on Thursday after traders took comments from Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, to mean the central bank was comfortable with a weaker pound.
Mr King said sterling’s fall was helpful in rebalancing the UK economy to be more focused on exports.

“The fall in the exchange rate that we have seen will be helpful, but there’s no doubt that we need to see a shift of resources into net exports that compete with imports and help to reduce the trade deficit,” Mr King said.
“Mervyn King’s comments reinforced to the market that the Bank of England is actually in favour of a weak pound,” said Mark O’Sullivan at Currencies Direct.
“If we continue to see the pound being talked down from the top then the downward spiral towards parity with the euro will continue apace.”
