I am also a manual man
Well 1977,
That's ok. Mine works for me, yours works for you. I can tell you that in the company (EZ) when I (in this weather) switch off the A/THR and AP it's not accepted. And to be honoust, I don't see the reason why. For those who don't fly the airbus, I will explain myself. In the company I work for, and I guess that counts for the most of them, that if an aircraft manufactor recommends or describes a technique for let's say a (crosswind) landing in adverse weather conditions, and I divert from that by switching off the A/THR e.g., and I fuck up I will be personally blamed for that. Since the airbus has Groundspeed-mini I am expected (SOP) to use it, managed speed during approach. So if I would fly in manual thrust, I have to chase the Vapp, since it moves up and down. Plus I have to follow the FD which also moves up and down because of the powerchanges you're making. And on top of that offcourse the corrections on the roll-axis. It doesn't make life easier.
The airbus flies on automation very well in adverse weather conditions. I learned this technique from an instructor and put it into practice. It works very well without (literally) any sweat. Best use of equipment I would say.
C.
It's not necessary to chase the speed target - just set a reference thrust level and make small corrections.
Is the aircraft flying me?
Big problem. You need to do something.
Should is geen must. M.a.w. Wat jij doet is prima. Mijn reactie is niet op jouw techniek (how dare I?), puur op de interpretatie van de OM A/FCOM.
