Hey FD,

Abaco-Air.

I spent the
impact-night of hurricane Katrina at ______ place, home alone and
initially with plenty of power. Having set myself up for the worst,
with flashlights/spare batteries/a battery radio/plenty of water/food/
money/boots (well no boots, ok. ok... I'll get those next time) I
didn't feel uncomfortable at all until the lights started to go off
and
on way too intermittently.
As it was completely dark outside, this could have been a party
setting if it weren't for the fact that I really was the only one in
the
whole block who was there. 'There' is in a gorgeous townhouse in
_______, in _______ Miami by the way.
So there I was, and there was Katrina. And man, does she bitch!! Even
in total darkness, she produced the most howling noises I have ever
heard a woman utter. This was going to be a rough one I realized when
the clouds were just flashing by, strobe-lighted by cloud to
cloud/cloud to ground/cloud to sky and probably ground to somewhere
lightning as clearly poles were popping out of the ground left
and right.
I don't want to scare you at all, I was safe in a concrete-ly well
built house, but I have never experienced such raw nature before.
The general direction of the wind (I should call it stream at it
simply did not stop, heck let's call it a jetstream) was parrallel
to our three-house block and the sliding doors that connect the living
room to the backyard didn't give an inch while I could see cows..
no really it wasn't that bad, just kidding.. but I saw leaves and
branches of the most exotic sort passing by absolutely horizontally
and I'm talking about their direction, hoping that will give you an
indication of how strong this experience was.
So, it doesn't have to be pre-thunder / ozone rich to see green skies.
Even at night!

And then the power went out.
Just like that.
And that sucked.

The night was quiet, but most nights are quiet here.
But it was hot... and messy. And I simply couldn't go to bed yet, not
knowing what was going to come.
I turned on the radio and tuned to 87.7, a permanent audio feed from
one of the local news stations.
That was my saviour, as it gave me a sense of connection to the rest
of the people that were going through this, but it especially
helped me estimate what else was going to come.
And thank god for cellphones and Cingular wireless because I could
continue to make phone calls and send and receive! text messages.
That, combined with all supplies, got me through this radar-red and
sky-green night that I will never forget.
The aftermath was incredible, and the destruction was appareant when
________________ took me on a tour through the neighbourhood.
I was lucky, it's that simple.
The attached pictures show what a category one hurricane can do. Now
that it's clear that there has been horrible destruction in Louisiana
we
simply must be very thankful that it was just this and not more.

We got the power back on sunday, and the phoneline too. After cleanup
and helping some other people with a borrowed chainsaw (I like working
with chainsaws I have discovered) including wacking my way trough a
amazone-like backyard slashing little branches with that Stihl
on high RPM (sorry grandma) I feel like I have one more backup plan
would I ever have to retire pre-maturely.
