Mooi verhaal, kudo's voor Qantas, en natuurlijk alle crews (flight + ground) die dat mogelijk gemaakt hebben.

Vermist zeilmeisje gespot vanuit Qantas-vliegtuig

PERTH - Het Amerikaanse zeilmeisje Abby dat werd vermist op de Indische Oceaan is gevonden dankzij de inzet van een Qantas-vliegtuig. Dat melden Australische media. Qantas stuurde een Airbus A330 vanaf het West-Australische Perth de lucht in om te helpen zoeken naar de zestienjarige Abby.


Dat bleek niet voor niets te zijn geweest: de zeilboot van het meisje werd vrijdag vanaf het vliegtuig gespot. Via de radio werd contact met haar gemaakt. Hoewel haar boot is beschadigd, maakt het meisje het goed. Ze heeft nog voor twee weken proviand aan boord.

Nu de locatie waar het meisje zich bevind bekend is, zijn schepen onderweg om daar te redden. Het Qantas-vliegtuig is inmiddels teruggekeerd naar Australië.

Ik wilde net zeggen, pushbacken maar en dat meisje laten zeilen! :grijns:
 
Fijn dat ze gevonden is, maar ik vind het behoorlijk overdreven om zoveel belasting-geld uit te geven aan het opsporen van iemand die zelf bewust zo'n groot risico heeft genomen.

Met datzelfde geld hadden ze in Australie zelf waarschijnlijk heel wat meer vermiste personen op kunnen sporen.

When asked if Australia would seek to get the money back, Kinley said: "No, that's the way the system runs.
"We would expect people to rescue any Australian yachtsman (in these conditions)," he said.

"It's our obligation to do this and we'll fulfil those obligations as Australia does."

A vessel should reach her in about 24 hours, he told reporters at 5pm (AEST) on Friday.

Her boat was upright but had lost its mast due to rough weather conditions.

"She's in the boat, the boat's seaworthy, it's not taking on water," Kinley said.

Kinley said a French fishing vessel would rescue Abby.

Australia would send more aircraft to monitor the situation on Saturday. It was quite likely Abby would be taken to La Reunion, but that had not been settled.

Rescuers had their "fingers crossed still", Kinley said.

The accident happened in very heavy weather, but conditions were now normal, with a four to five-metre swell and fairly heavy winds.

Abby's location was described as "way down in the southern ocean", about 2000 miles southwest of Perth. It was a long way from merchant shipping routes and it was lucky the French vessel was in the vicinity, Kinley said.

She is in international waters, but in Australia's search and rescue zone.
