AIRLINES REPORT PILOT RECRUITMENT PLANS TO MEET MARKET GROWTH
Twenty-two airlines and operators attended the Employment Opportunities Conference held by the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA), on Saturday 9 October at Heathrow.
There was a renewed feeling of optimism among the 400 delegates at the conference – pilots looking to further their careers and aspiring pilots - as they were welcomed by Captain Dave Boys, Vice-Chairman of BALPA.
Almost every airline at the conference announced expectations of, or actual, job vacancies. Three airlines - easyJet, BA and Cathay Pacific - each said they would be recruiting over 100 extra pilots and significant pilot recruitment was announced by Dragonair, Thomas Cook, Bmed, FlyJet, BA CitiExpress, GB Airways, bmibaby, Excel Airways, and Flightline.
Anticipated pilot recruitment with unspecified numbers was announced by Virgin Atlantic, Parc Aviation, Jet2/Channel Express, ThomsonFly/Britannia Airways, Privatair, FlyBe, First Choice, Emerald Airways, Emirates, EAAC and Cabair.
‘All this is very encouraging for pilots who want to progress their careers within aviation,’ Captain Boys said. For aspiring pilots he gave a fascinating insight into a day in the life of a commercial pilot and spelled out some operational problems encountered on a flight to the Mediterranean which had a mixture of technical problems and a drunken passenger – leading to six hours extended duty. ‘But there is no other job I would rather do, even after almost 30 years of flying,’ he declared.
BALPA, Captain Boys said, ‘is happy to embrace growth and cares not only for those already employed as commercial pilots, but also for the next generation.’ He said that the Association is ‘not shy to speak openly on important issues’ and gave the example of BALPA’s campaign on sky marshals.
Pilot recruitment manager for British Airways, Senior First Officer John Monks, declared that the conference was very worthwhile attending. ‘Overall it has been another very successful day for BALPA as well as all the airlines ,’ he said.
Captain Mike Wood, flight operations director at FlyBe said he was delighted to have attended. ‘The snapshot presentations from the other airlines and the interest shown by the delegates said a lot about the pilot market. Speaking to the delegates in the informal session helped tremendously to find the right pilot employees. During the day my colleague and I spoke to nearly 100 prospective FlyBe pilots and a two minute talk is worth a thousand words on paper.’
A significant number of interviews for both Co-Pilot and Captain positions are expected to result from discussions between delegates and airlines.
