A friend of mine makes an attempt to start the Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial in a M.H. 1521 Broussard.

The temperature is approx. -7 degrees celsius and the engine is rather reluctant to say the least...

But this is what life is like, when you enjoy flying with round engines!

Having operated radial engined aircraft in real Winter conditions - we always pre-heated the engines before we started them. We also used 15W50 multigrade oil.

In this video the engine barely starts and I expect starting this engine at such a low temperature drastically increases the wear on all rotating components. In addition it may take a while for the oil to flow normally further increasing the wear.

Better to have pre-heated this engine imho.
